Captain Joseph S. Murphy, II is an IOMM&P member who sailed as Master on various tankers and LNG vessels for over 35 years. Joe holds a 8th issue of an Unlimited Masters License - AGT. Since 1984, Joe has been an instructor at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, located in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. Captain Murphy is AGAIN serving as the Vice Chairman of the Merchant Vessel Personnel Advisory Committee (MERPAC) for the U.S. Coast Guard.
Joe has achieved his reputation in teaching and by publishing “The Deck Officer Study Guide”, which are known to most mariners as "The Murphy Books". These books contain the actual hard copy USCG questions and answers released by the National Maritime Center (NMC). "The Murphy Books" are published bi-annually. The NMC presently updates questions to the database as often as 1 to 3 times per year. Joe is looked upon as the expert on license exams and USCG questions by hundreds, if not thousands, of mariners, including instructors from all levels of license exam schools across the nation.
